Best of NTC: Summer’s coming

Teaching tip

Have a look at what fun you can have in summer in English-speaking countries around the world.

Whether it’s the wildly popular Glastonbury Festival or the more sedate Glyndebourne Festival, there’s a wide range of events going on this summer.

There’s tennis in leafy Wimbledon in south-west London, Glastonbury Festival in Somerset and Glyndebourne Festival in East Sussex. In Ireland you can enjoy the Rose of Tralee International (beauty) Festival and across the pond in the USA are the July 4th Independence Day celebrations and the Iowa State Fair. If you want to go Down Under, then what about the Brisbane Festival rounding off the summer in September?

If you would like to know more about these events, then click on the left button below.

If you would like to do a short activity at A2 level about summer weather, then click on the right button below.

  • Tell students they’re going to talk about summer weather.
  • Elicit summer weather words: (adjectives) chilly, cold, cool, cloudy, dry, hot, showery, sunny, warm, windy; (verbs) rain, hail, storm. Write them on the board.
  • Ask students to work in pairs and write a summer weather forecast. On the board write: Tomorrow it will be hot and it will rain in the evening. Tell students to write a good forecast and a bad forecast for next week (Next week it will …) and include tips like take an umbrella / put on sun cream etc. Help students as needed.
  • Ask students to read out their forecasts.
