Inhalt
In the last few years, teaching competences has begun to take over in the English classroom as much as in any other classroom in Germany. While it is without doubt necessary to teach students to read, write and speak in English, we should not forget what the lack of social skills, sound judgment and humanity can lead to. After all, who wants to confide his money to a bank clerk who is excellent with figures, but does not have a heart? Literature, therefore, must have its place in the English classroom, and preferably so if it deals with the key issues of our lives - what does it mean to be human? How essential are friendship, love and a concept of soul to humanity? Where do we draw the line between what is ethical and unethical when it comes to curing disease? In this workshop we will have a look at how these questions are tackled in Kazuo Ishiguro's novel Never Let Me Go.
