Out and about task

Teaching tip

We teachers are always looking for ways of helping our learners to put their English into practice outside of the sometimes artificial environment of the classroom. To give you and your students some practical and fun ideas, the authors of 'Network Now A2.1' have thought of some tasks for your students to put what they've learnt into practice in their daily lives. Click here to find out more ...

Network 2.1 has an exciting new element which comes up in one of the Selfstudy sections of each unit: the Out and about task. The idea behind this task is to give your students either a task or a tip on how to use some of the language they've learnt in real life situations. As you know, it's very important to show learners that, even at this level, they have learnt things which can be used outside of the classroom. The topics are uncomplicated and appropriate for A2-level students and include tasks that students can do for themselves.

Although the Out and about tasks are meant to be done by the students in their own time, you can support your learners by making a link with their English lessons. The activities below are just some ideas to encourage them to try the tasks.

Activities

Unit 1, Step 2: Family relationships (page 17)

Put the students into small groups. Ask each group to choose a famous person (have some ideas ready in case they need them) and tell them to try to draw the complete family tree, with the peoples' names and their relationship to the famous person. The group with the biggest family tree wins.

Unit 3, Step 1: Read the signs (page 51)

For the lesson after they've done this Selfstudy, print out some signs from the Internet, for example http://www.gettingaroundgermany.info/zeichen.shtml, and get the students to tell you what they mean in English. Ask the class whether anyone has seen any other signs during the previous week. They don't have to know the exact names, just be able to explain what the signs mean.

Unit 6, Step 1: Touch screen instructions (page 107)

Another idea which your students can easily put into practice is to switch their computer toolbar to English – they already know what the words and phrases mean in German and so should be able to work in English too.

And generally …: Before you begin a new unit or step, ask whether anyone has done the last Out and about task and whether he / she would like to share his / her results with the class.
