The UK has long been a leader in soft power, so attracting and persuading others rather than coercing them. A government review on Global Britain from 2021 states: "The UK's soft power is rooted in who we are as a country: our values and way of life, and the vibrancy and diversity of our Union. It is central to our international identity as an open, trustworthy and innovative country."
The UK's soft power strengths lie, in particular, in
• media and culture: the BBC, film, music - think Adele, Ed Sheeran, Elton John,
• education: universities, research, the British Council,
• sport: Premier League, Wimbledon …
