Storytelling for a Better World

David Heathfield (Teacher, Teacher Trainer, Author)

Social justice and other challenging issues are addressed through telling stories from the world's oral cultures. What students learn from a story is not simply what happens in the story but in their response to it. Creative response tasks lead to insights about how to make the world better. We can engage students in creative communication in the English language classroom through simple learner-centred and purposeful storytelling and drama activities designed to get students talking freely and fluently. Through storytelling we can offer our students opportunities to appreciate cultural diversity.
David Heathfield is an international storyteller based in Exeter, UK. He teaches English, runs training workshops for teachers and tells stories from the world's oral cultures. He runs online Creative and Engaging Storytelling for Teachers (CrEST) courses https://davidheathfieldblog.wordpress.com/teacher-training/ and has worked as an online storytelling teacher trainer internationally with the British Council, the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL) and the Hands Up Project. He writes about student creativity in language learning and is the author of the Teacher Development books Storytelling with our Students: Telling tales from around the World and Spontaneous Speaking: Drama Activities for Confidence and Fluency (both DELTA Publishing) as well as the series Student Stories for English Teaching Professional and World Stories for IATEFL Voices. He wrote a chapter Storytelling for a Better World which appears in the British Council's free downloadable book Integrating Global Issues in the Creative English Language Classroom.
