Teaching tip
Write two words on the board which appear to be unconnected, for example, bread and umbrella.
Help students to find a connection between them.
For example: Yesterday it was raining. I took my umbrella when I went to the baker’s to buy some bread.
Or: An umbrella and a loaf of bread are both round.
Or: The words umbrella and bread both have the letters b, r, e and a in them.
Or: They are important words in England.
When you have worked through one pair of words together, elicit two words from the students and ask them to find a link.
Encourage students to be creative.
