Cost of living
Teaching tip
This Christmas we need to think carefully about how to cut our costs. Encourage your students to be creative with ideas for less expensive purchases.
Example:
I’ll buy a chicken instead of a turkey.
Or
Instead of a turkey I’ll buy a chicken.
I’ll use newspaper instead of wrapping paper.
Or
Instead of wrapping paper, I’ll use newspaper.
Read out the ‘old’ purchase and ask students to write down cheaper replacements. Encourage use of instead of. And encourage creativity! Choose the best alternatives.
Can you think of replacements for:
a bottle of champagne | a box of Belgian chocolates | a cashmere sweater |
a coat | a Christmas tree | a diamond necklace |
an ebike | a holiday in the Carribean | a laptop |
a luxury spa weekend | a mobile phone | opera tickets |
a pair of boots | a piano | a television |
