My name is ...
Teaching tip
How often have you introduced yourself to people and said your name? But how often have you explained its meaning, how you feel about your name and the story of why you were given that name in the first place?
This is a nice activity for the beginning of a course when students are still getting to know each other.
Before the lesson, prepare some information about your own name.
Think about some of these questions:
What is the meaning of your name?
Is it the usual spelling?
Is it a common name?
Do you like your name?
Did you like your name when you were a child?
Do you have a short form?
Why did your parents choose this name?
Do you have a funny story about your name?
Read out and show students what you have written about your own name and then ask them to prepare some information about their names. Encourage the use of devices to help find information. Help with vocabulary. Students don’t have to answer all the questions.
In turn, each student talks about their name.
