Teaching tip

Have you heard about the Oscar nominated film Lion, starring Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman? And did the story sound familiar? Here’s why…

In Network Now B1.1 on page 131 there is a text in Life stories called A real homepage, which tells the incredible story of Saroo Khan. At the age of five he found himself lost and alone thousands of miles from home, and twenty-five years later he traced his family in India from his adopted home in Tasmania – using satellite images on Google Earth. It is a moving and fascinating story, and it is not surprising that it has now arrived on the big screen as the film called Lion.

The film was nominated for Oscars in six categories including best film, best supporting actor for Dev Patel and best supporting actress for Nicole Kidman. It was nominated for four awards at the Golden Globes and it won two awards at the BAFTA screen awards. To date it has made over $100m profit on a relatively small $12m budget. So it is definitely a success story!

And that’s not the only real story in Network Now B1.1 – only ten pages earlier in Step 1 is the dramatic story of 50-year-old Mark Lake (who was old enough to know better!) and how he became lost in the Australian outback: Tourist rescued after three days in the outback.

Remember: Students can find out more information about these stories on the Internet. And what about organizing a visit to your local cinema to see the film Lion. Just don’t get lost on the way!
